A denture is a custom-made removable prosthesis used for the replacement of missing teeth. You’ve more than likely heard of a denture before, but you may not know that there are several different kinds. The two most common are complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used in cases where all the teeth are missing. Partial dentures are used in cases where only some of the teeth are missing.
Complete dentures usually look great since you’re essentially getting a complete makeover for the appearance of your smile. The most common frustration patients experience is a loose denture. Complete dentures rely solely on your jaw’s ridges and tissues for support. Every mouth is very different – some people have a great situation for a denture, and others not so much. Many patients struggle to accustom themselves to the denture, but with continued use and practice they can grow quite used to it.
Partial dentures use the remaining teeth and tissues as their support. Because they can rely on the natural teeth for support, they tend to stay in place better.
There are many variations on these two types of dentures. You may have heard the terms overdenture, immediate denture, hybrid denture, implant-supported denture, esthetic partial, interim denture, flipper or more. A well-made custom denture usually takes several visits over the course of a few weeks. Its typical to have a few follow-up appointments after receiving the denture to make adjustments as your mouth tries to adapt to its new situation.
