One of the simplest and fastest ways to improve your smile is with teeth whitening, also called bleaching. This has become such a popular procedure that there are numerous methods for achieving a white, bright smile. Some of these methods work better than others.
Teeth come in all different colors. No matter what color you start with, teeth naturally change in color as we age. They are constantly subject to staining from the foods and drinks we take in. Some of the worst culprits are the things we ingest the most, such as coffees and teas.
The type of whitening procedure that is best for you depends on the type and degree of discoloration you’re experiencing. For example, some stains we are born with and others we acquire. These stains can be within the tooth structure or simply on the outer surface of our teeth. Some discolorations are easy to correct, others can be very challenging.
At Buxton Family Dental we offer several different tooth whitening techniques in order to meet the various needs of our patients.
Take-Home Whitening Trays:
The most familiar whitening method involves the fabrication of whitening trays that are custom fit to your mouth. We provide whitening gel that you’ll place into the trays at your convenience. The trays can be worn for several hours throughout the day or overnight while you sleep. How long you bleach depends on how stained your teeth are and how white you’d like them to become. The average case takes a couple weeks. Different people experience different levels of sensitivity when bleaching. This can also limit the frequency of your tray use and the strength of your whitening solution.
To make the trays all we need is an impression of your mouth. This requires less than a 30-minute appointment followed by a day or two for us to make your trays. We use Ultradent’s Opalescence® as our take-home whitening system. Click here to learn more about this fantastic product.
You may have seen advertisements promising white teeth with one visit to your dentist. While this is certainly possible, the desired effect is rarely achieved that simply. However, in-office whitening can accelerate the process and provide a safer environment for stronger solutions that take-home trays won’t allow. This treatment usually takes a little more than an hour in our office to complete.
We offer the very popular Opalescence Boost® system. First we paint a barrier along your teeth that protects your gums. Next the whitening gel is applied and allowed to sit for about 20 minutes. The gel is removed and the effect evaluated. This process is repeated as needed.
Results are more immediate with in-office whitening procedures, but we always recommend follow-up home bleaching with trays for optimal results. For this reason, custom-made whitening trays and take-home bleaching solution is provided for each of our patients at no extra charge.
