Laughing Kids | Children's Dentist Fort CollinsAt Buxton Family Dental, we welcome children of all ages!

One of the most valuable lessons we can teach kids from the start is that trips to the dentist can be a fun, interesting experience. Positive visits from the very beginning help kids avoid dental anxiety when they are older.

Experiencing the new sights and sounds of an office filled with unfamiliar and strange-looking equipment can often be overwhelming for a child. But Dr. Kendell Buxton has significant experience working in pediatric dental offices and treating children with a wide range of needs. And as a father of six great kids, you can be confident he knows exactly what it takes to help children of all ages feel safe and comfortable with us!

Your Child’s First Visit

The first visit can be a little unnerving, often more so for the parent than the child! We respect your concerns, so we welcome you to hold your child in your lap while we take a look in their mouth.

We have two primary goals for these first few “happy visits.”

First, we want to establish a comfortable relationship so that your child comes to know and trust us. We use a technique called "tell-show-do" that takes advantage of their natural curiosity to get them accustomed to the new sights and sounds of our office.

Child Patient | Kid's Dentist Fort CollinsThe second goal is to talk to you about the role you play in helping protect your child’s oral health. Dr. Buxton will answer your questions and discuss the importance of a healthy diet, proper dental care at home, and continuing preventive care. When we know your child is comfortable with us, we will incorporate cleanings and exams into these appointments.

If you have a child who resists treatment, please don’t feel like you are doing something wrong. Our caring team will offer all the support your child needs to stay calm, and we will never try to treat a child before they are ready. We can also provide nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” which is completely safe for children. Your little one won’t go to sleep, but they will feel a sense of calm and well-being that is critical for their future oral health care.

Dental Care as Your Child Grows

Your child’s dental needs frequently change as they grow, and we’re here to make sure they get the care they need. We protect baby teeth and do our best to keep them intact until permanent teeth are ready to emerge. Sometimes this involves a dental filling, or it may require a stainless steel crown that protects the tooth until it’s ready to come out on its own. If decay is more severe, we may need to perform a procedure called a pulpotomy to remove diseased pulp and preserve the tooth.

As your child grows, we will monitor their oral health and offer appropriate treatment when necessary. Around age seven, we start looking for potential alignment problems with an orthodontic screening. If treatment is necessary, we will coordinate with your child’s orthodontist to ensure that we are supporting their treatment.

Please Call Us to Arrange a Visit

We find that most children do incredibly well when we treat them the way we would like our kids to be treated. Please call our Fort Collins dental office, and we will be happy to arrange a time for you and your child to stop by for a visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Buxton Family Dental, we love seeing children!

We understand that each child has their own unique personality and needs, and Dr. Buxton has extensive experience in treating children. We do our best to accommodate each child and make their visit to the dentist a positive experience.

Taking care of your child’s mouth is a little different than taking care of your own. As your child grows, their dental needs continuously change, and you will need to adapt to them. We’re more than happy to guide you through the rapidly changing stages of your child’s oral health. While your child will lose their baby teeth one day, they do serve a purpose now and play a crucial role in preparing the mouth for the permanent teeth that will follow.

Some of the most common procedures we perform for our smallest patients include:

  • Exams, cleanings, x-rays
  • Fluoride application, sealants, and fillings
  • Stainless steel crowns
  • Oral hygiene instruction
  • Pulpotomies
  • Orthodontic screenings and space maintainers

Our goal is to create such a positive experience for your child that dental care is something they want to do, not something they have to do. For more information on any of these procedures, please contact us at Buxton Family Dental and set up an appointment for your little one!

The transition from primary teeth ("baby teeth") to permanent teeth goes through several stages starting around age 6 or 7 and ending around age 12 or 13.  What many people don't realize is that the permanent molars don't actually replace any primary teeth, but instead grow into the space behind all the primary molars.  This first set of molars erupts around age six!  The next set comes in around age 12.  The final set of molars (wisdom teeth) appear in the later teen years.  Compared to primary molars, the permanent molars typically have very deep grooves and fissures on the chewing surface of the teeth which readily attract food and bacteria.  The teeth are also located far back in hard to reach areas for a growing mouth.  Then throw in the fact that adolescents often struggle with adequate oral hygiene and you have a recipe for disaster!  We typically recommend sealants for the first and second molars for all children to protect the teeth while they learn how to properly care for their teeth.  Sealants are a protective coating painted on the tooth to seal off the cavity-prone grooves and fissures.  We'll usually try to seal all four teeth in one appointment around age 6 and again around age 12.

To prepare the teeth for sealants the areas to be sealed are  thoroughly cleaned and evaluated for existing decay.  The sealant is then flowed into the grooves and hardened with our curing light.  The appointment can be very simple and takes less than an hour.  The most challenging aspect is keeping the tooth isolated and dry so the sealant can be placed adequately.  This may require some extra patience for an energetic child, but overall it is a completely painless and simple procedure.

Sealants are not meant to last forever.  Ideally they'll last through the teen years.  At this point a person should be better able to care for their own teeth without the aid of sealants.  If parts of a sealant are lost before this time they can be quickly repaired during a routine checkup.
