Sedation Dentistry in Fort Collins, CO

Scared Woman in dental chair | dentist Ft. Collins CO Millions of people suffer from dental anxiety at a level that makes it a challenge to keep up with routine appointments that protect their oral health. This is unfortunate because updated dental technology and sedation dentistry have made procedures more efficient, comfortable, and stress-free than ever before.

You have unique needs, and our goal at Buxton Family Dental is to develop a trusting relationship with you so you feel comfortable turning to us any time there is a problem. Our supportive team has helped many patients overcome their anxiety, and we will help you too!

Understanding Your Anxiety

People experience dental anxiety for many different reasons. Some patients have trouble getting past the sights and sounds of a dental office, while others dread injections or worry about a touchy gag reflex.

The first step is for you to share your concerns with us. You may be embarrassed at first, but we want you to know that dental anxiety is a common concern, and we have helped many people in your situation. You will never receive any judgment from us.

Customized Sedation Options

We have worked hard to create an office environment that’s warm and comforting. Our patients appreciate the special touches we've included, like pillows, warm blankets, and entertainment in our treatment rooms. But while amenities are helpful, our team also goes out of their way to put you at ease and help you feel like a member of our family.

Before any treatment, Dr. Buxton will be happy to talk to you about our sedation options.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a safe, odorless gas that you inhale through a small nasal mask. Just sit back, breathe normally, and in a few moments, you will experience a sense of calm, well-being, and even slight euphoria. Patients appreciate nitrous oxide because it helps them feel detached from the activities around them, and many patients tell us they don’t remember the details of their procedure.

Another benefit of nitrous oxide is that it leaves your system quickly after we stop the flow of gas. You will be able to return to your usual routine without any side effects like sleepiness.

Oral Sedation

Some patients need a little more than nitrous oxide, so we also offer the option of oral sedation.

Dr. Buxton will prescribe a mild sedative with instructions to take it about an hour before your appointment. This allows you to arrive at our office feeling calm and relaxed so you can get through your procedure without any stress. The medication will make you feel drowsy and comfortable, and some patients even fall asleep during their treatment.

IV Sedation

If you suffer from extreme anxiety, nitrous or oral sedation may not be sufficient for your needs. In this case, we are pleased to offer the option of IV sedation. A trained nurse anesthetist administers the medicine here at our office, so we can offer twilight sedation that puts you on the edge of unconsciousness, but you can still be awakened if necessary. Some patients would prefer to go to sleep during their procedure, so the nurse is fully qualified to deliver safe deep sedation. Patients who choose IV sedation usually have no memory at all of what took place during their appointment.

Please note that oral and IV sedation both take longer to leave your bloodstream, so you will need a driver to get you to and from your appointment safely.

Comfortable Dentistry Is Possible!

Regardless of your level of fear, we can help. If your anxiety has caused you to neglect your oral health, please don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed! We understand, and we want you to know we will never shame or lecture you. Our entire team is here to support you, and our only goal is to help you get your oral health back on track.
